The term "naturopathy" was created from "natura" (Latin root for birth) and "pathos" (the Greek root for suffering) to suggest "natural healing". Naturopaths claim the ancient Greek "Father of Medicine", Hippocrates, as the first advocate of naturopathic medicine, before the term existed.

Ballina Naturopathy FAQs

What is natural medicine?

Natural medicine is one of the oldest healing arts in the world, Western herbal medicine dates back to the time of Hippocrates.

Natural medicine is currently used by 75% of the worlds’ population.  It has been gazetted by the world health organization as being of vital importance to the welfare of many indigenous populations around the world.  Its effectiveness has been observed throughout history and across continents and cultures. Today, this empirical evidence is being backed up by scientific research.

A qualified naturopath utilises the elements from the earth and nature to re-establish balance within the human. Every one of us has an innate ability to heal ourselves given the correct treatment and combination of nutrition, exercise, relaxation and spirituality.

What are the aims of Natural Medicine or Naturopathy?

  • Promote optimal health
  • Prevent disease or disease progression
  • Provide a support base for health care
  • Facilitate active participation in the health goals that are identified
  • Initiate innate healing and restore balance when things go wrong

Is natural medicine safe?

Natural medicine if used properly, is a safe and effective primary health care resource.  It can fill gaps in conventional medical treatment and is seen as complementary as opposed to alternative in this regard.

It is important to seek a properly qualified practitioner for advice about herbal remedies, especially if taking any prescription medications.

Natural Medicine can successfully treat many common health problems and is particularly suited to the treatment of chronic disorders including:  Arthritis, Menopause , PMS, Menstrual irregularities, Fatigue, Lowered immunity, Asthma, Allergy, Allied cancer care, Anxiety, Autoimmunity, Headache, Depression, Digestive disturbances, High blood pressure, Cold & flu and Insomnia.

The Naturopathic Consultation!

A qualified naturopath will perform a comprehensive review of existing health concerns together with a full medical history review, investigation of dietary habits and perform non-invasive physical examination.  A treatment plan, goal setting and advice are tailored to suit individual lifestyle and health requirements.

Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine utilises quality medicinal herbs in the form of teas, tinctures, decoctions, syrups, ointments, pessaries or washes to provide symptomatic and therapeutic relief and promote healing.

Homoeopathy

Homoeopathic treatment is based on the principle of ‘like cures like’.  Remedies are chosen to reflect the character or symptoms of the patient, stimulating the body’s own healing mechanisms.  It is effective in treating acute, chronic, physical, emotional and inherited diseases.

Nutrition

Nutritional analysis can provide a basis for dietary recommendations for disease prevention and treatment. Eating a wide variety of whole foods provides us with a good foundation for optimal health.  Supplementation may be recommended on an individual basis.
