What Can Our Osteopathy Services Help With

Osteopathy is a health care practice that focuses on the treatment of the physical and nervous systems, assessing the structure (the joints, muscles, ligaments, nerves and fascia) to determine its impact on the function. For example, the position of your spine or hips may impact on how you swing the golf club or how you reach over to weed the garden. We can help this process!!

A comprehensive physical assessment to begin, will help shed light why you experience pain and discomfort, which will help develop the best osteopathic treatment approach and management plan, which is individually tailored to your needs.

The treatment is hands on therapy including massage, joint manipulation and mobilisation, dry needling, postural advice and exercise programs.

The profession is registered with AHPRA under allied health care and follows evidence based practice, where the osteopath integrates their clinical knowledge with the best available research evidence to help manage your health care complaint.

The osteopath will help empower and educate you to develop skills to help you self-manage your aches and pains to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Would You See An Osteopath?

The registered team of Osteopaths at Foundation Health (located in Ballina, in The Northern Rivers) recognises that every structure within the body is designed to move which enables optimal human function.

Osteopaths take into consideration the mechanisms of breathing, circulation of blood and lymphatics, nerve function, food digestion and elimination of waste products. The specialist care of an osteopath lets the body “speak” and gains information through palpation and manual testing.

Osteopathy recognises the interconnection between all parts and regions of the body. The Osteopath aims to not just treat the symptoms of the ailment but to ascertain the root of cause of the issue.

Osteopathy recognises that within every human being we possess inherent self healing and self regulating mechanisms.

As an Osteopath it is our role to assist this inherent function to restore optimal vitality and health for the client.

What Happens When You See An Osteopath?

The first time you visit one of the Osteopaths at Foundation Health (located in Ballina, in The Northern Rivers), we go through a detailed case history relating to your presenting complaint, a medical examination and discuss previous injuries / accidents and surgeries.

The client interview is important to gain a comprehensive view of the issue at hand. From here the Osteopath uses their highly trained Hand through palpation to gain information about mobility of the human body.

This manual diagnosis involves a physical assessment, orthopaedic and neurological examination to determine if pathology is considered. The physical assessment will aim to detect joint mobility, asymmetry of the spine, muscle tone or tenderness, muscle strength and balance all through manual palpation to help determine the root cause of the problem.

The Osteopath will assess the patient symptomatology and results from the physical examination and discuss our findings with the client and let you know what we feel is causing your pain, advise whether treatment is appropriate and what we recommend you do from here.

A typical treatment with your osteopath at Foundation Health (located in Ballina, in The Northern Rivers), will aim to decrease pain and stiffness and improve your overall function and wellbeing.

The Osteopath will use a variety of hands on techniques including soft tissue techniques, manipulation, cranial techniques and gentle balancing and fascial techniques.

The gentle, subtle approach of Osteopathy is particularly valuable when treating the elderly, children or acute conditions. The Osteopath will also offer postural or ergonomic advice on what to avoid to reduce the likelihood of re injury, and will include strength or stretch exercises to help aid your recovery.

Osteopaths also provide lifestyle and dietary advice which contribute to your balance and health as a happy human. The Osteopaths at Foundation Health (located in Ballina, in The Northern Rivers), look at the Whole picture of human functioning with a caring and comprehensive approach to health care, the treatment of an Osteopath will complement the body’s inherent healing mechanism and help you optimise your health and happiness.

About Byron Bay, NSW

Byron Bay (Minjungbal: Cavvanbah) is a beachside town located in the far-northeastern corner of the state of New South Wales, Australia on Bundjalung Country. It is located 772 kilometres (480 mi) north of Sydney and 165 kilometres (103 mi) south of Brisbane. Cape Byron, a headland adjacent to the town, is the easternmost point of mainland Australia. At the 2021 census, the town had a permanent population of 6,330. It is the largest town of Byron Shire local government area, though not the shire's administrative centre (which is Mullumbimby). == History == Byron Bay and surrounds are located on traditional lands of the Bundjalung Nation of the Arakwal, Minjungbal and the Widjabul people who have lived by the coast for at least 22,000 years. Traditional custodians of the region believe that the land and people were created by Nguthungulli, who rests at what is now called Julian Rocks. The traditional name of the township area was Cavvanbah, meaning "meeting place". Significant totems for the area include Wajung and Kabul. In 1770 Lieutenant James Cook found safe anchorage and named Cape Byron after a fellow sailor Vice Admiral 'Foul-Weather Jack' John Byron, circumnavigator of the world and grandfather of the poet Lord Byron. European settlement in the area took place in the 1830s.
