What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is an independent healthcare profession centred on the relationship between the structure of the body and its overall function. Our qualified osteopaths assess how your bones, muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues interact to better understand the underlying clinical presentation of your discomfort.

Depending on your individual physical assessment, a practitioner may incorporate various manual techniques during your management plan, including:

Soft Tissue Techniques & Massage: To help address localised muscle tension and support circulation.

Joint Mobilisation: Gentle, passive joint movements intended to assist with range of motion and flexibility.

Myofascial Release: Targeted pressure to address structural strain within connective tissue layers.

Cranial & Gentle Balancing Techniques: Low-force, non-invasive approaches often used for acute pain presentations, older adults, or paediatric care.

Exercise Rehabilitation: Tailored stretching, mobility, and strengthening guidance to support your ongoing physical recovery at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see an osteopath at the Ballina clinic?

No, a referral is not required to book an appointment. You can book directly online or by calling the clinic. If you are attending under a GP Management Plan (EPC/CDM), a referral from your GP will be needed. Please contact us prior to your appointment to confirm eligibility.

How many appointments will I need?

This varies depending on your individual presentation, the nature of your complaint, and how your body responds to treatment. Your osteopath will discuss an indicative management plan at your initial consultation, including a realistic outlook on frequency and duration of care. Individual progress will vary.

The gentle, subtle approach of Osteopathy is particularly valuable when treating the elderly, children or acute conditions. The Osteopath will also offer postural or ergonomic advice on what to avoid to reduce the likelihood of re-injury, and will include strength or stretch exercises to help aid your recovery.

Osteopaths also provide lifestyle and dietary advice that contributes to your balance and health as a happy human. The Osteopaths at Foundation Health (located in Ballina, in the Northern Rivers) look at the Whole picture of human functioning with a caring and comprehensive approach to health care. The treatment of an Osteopath will complement the body’s inherent healing mechanism and help you optimise your health and happiness.

Can I claim osteopathy through my private health fund?

No, a referral is not required to book an appointment. You can book directly online or by calling the clinic. If you are attending under a GP Management Plan (EPC/CDM), a referral from your GP will be needed. Please contact us prior to your appointment to confirm eligibility.

Do you treat WorkCover and SIRA patients at the Ballina clinic?

Yes. Dr Tom Jungwirth and Dr Jeremy Jago hold current SIRA registration and are eligible to provide treatment under NSW workers compensation arrangements at our River Street clinic. Please contact us prior to booking to confirm availability and billing requirements.

Is there a Medicare rebate available for osteopathy?

Osteopathy is not covered under standard Medicare. However, patients managing a chronic condition under a GP Management Plan may be eligible for Medicare-subsidised consultations through the Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) scheme. Speak with your GP to determine whether you qualify before booking.

What is the difference between an initial consultation and a follow-up appointment?

Your initial consultation runs for 45 to 60 minutes and includes a comprehensive case history, physical examination, and hands-on treatment where clinically appropriate. Follow-up appointments run for approximately 30 minutes and focus on progress assessment and continued manual therapy. Fees differ between the two. Current pricing is available on our online booking page.

Can osteopathy help during or after pregnancy?

Osteopathy is commonly sought during pregnancy to assist with lower back, pelvic girdle, and rib discomfort associated with postural and structural changes. Post-partum care is also available to support recovery after birth. Dr Amelia Rocco has a particular focus in this area and consults at our Ballina clinic on Thursdays.

Is there parking available at the River Street clinic?

Yes. Our River Street location has nearby public parking options and is centrally located within Ballina for patients travelling from across the Northern Rivers. If you are travelling from closer to the coast, our East Ballina clinic on Links Avenue may be more convenient.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring any relevant medical imaging (X-rays, MRI reports), a list of current medications, and your private health fund card if you intend to claim a rebate on the day. Wear or bring comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows your osteopath to assess posture and movement.
