Trigger Point

Trigger Point is a specific area within skeletal muscle that can produce pain when compressed. It is a hyperirritable spot, a hallmark of myofascial pain syndrome, typically found in taut bands of muscles or the fascia. This neuromuscular phenomenon may palpate as nodules or knots, causing discomfort and limiting movement.

These Trigger points are differentiated into active and latent types. Active trigger points cause pain at rest, while latent ones only provoke discomfort upon pressure. They are believed to be caused by muscle overuse or injury, leading to a cycle of pain-spasm-pain.

The management of trigger points often involves physical therapies such as trigger point massage, dry needling, manual therapy, and stretching exercises. Trigger point injections with local anesthetics or saline are also utilized for relief.
