Sphenopalatine Ganglion

Sphenopalatine Ganglion is a complex neural structure situated in the pterygopalatine fossa behind the middle nasal turbinate, part of the autonomic nervous system. Known for its role in various pain syndromes, it communicates with several other cranial nerves and transmits sensory, motor, and autonomic signals. This ganglion has been a target for clinical interventions due to its intricate connections to the trigeminal nerve—the primary nerve involved in headache disorders.

Playing a significant role in cluster headaches and migraines, Sphenopalatine Ganglion’s blockade or stimulation provides therapeutic benefits. Its unique location allows minimally invasive access via the nasal cavity—a feature utilized in numerous treatment modalities. The sphenopalatine ganglion also plays a part in lacrimation (tear production), rhinorrhea (nasal discharge), and certain aspects of facial sweating.

Despite its small size—measuring roughly 5mm—it carries significant influence over a broad range of physiological functions. While our understanding of this structure has increased over time, further research into its roles within the human body could unlock new treatment avenues for various neurological conditions.
