Sphenobasilar Synchondrosis

Sphenobasilar Synchondrosis (SBS) is an interconnecting juncture situated at the centre of the human cranium, structurally uniting the sphenoid and occipital bones. Existing as a cartilaginous joint in early life, it undergoes fusion and solidifies in adulthood, playing a pivotal role in cranial functionality.

Functionally, SBS is involved directly in cranial mobility allowing minimal movement between adjacent bones. This subtle flexibility aids the accommodation of intracranial pressure changes, significantly enhancing cerebral blood flow efficiency and cerebrospinal fluid dynamics.

Anatomically, SBS forms a part of the craniosacral system – a physiological system influencing multiple body functions via its interconnections with the central nervous system. Its pathological dysfunctions are implicated in conditions such as migraines and tinnitus amongst other neurological disorders.

In osteopathic medicine, manipulation of SBS has been proposed to alleviate certain health issues; however, the efficacy of these techniques remains under rigorous scientific scrutiny due to variations in individual anatomical structures and lack of extensive empirical evidence.
