Joint Mobilization

Joint mobilization is a manual therapy intervention, primarily applied in physical rehabilitation protocols. It involves passive movement techniques that stretch articular structures and improve joint play by delivering controlled forces to a specific joint. The primary objective is the restoration of optimal function following injury or conditions that limit mobility, like arthritis.

This therapeutic approach has been shown to enhance proprioceptive feedback, alleviate pain, and increase range of motion. Joint mobilization can be administered at different grades from I to V depending on the patient’s tolerance and condition severity. Grade I and II are used for pain relief while grade III, IV and V aim at increasing range of motion.

While it is a common technique among physical therapists, it requires extensive training to administer effectively without causing further harm. Its application spans across various body parts including but not limited to the spine, shoulder, knee and ankle joints.
