Fascial Distortion Model

The Fascial Distortion Model (FDM) is a model of diagnosis and treatment for musculoskeletal pain. Originated in the 1990s by American physician Stephen Typaldos, FDM focuses on distortions in the connective tissue system to explain pain, tension, and reduced mobility. The model identifies six primary types of fascial distortions including folding distortions, triggerbands, cylinder distortions, among others.

Each distortion type corresponds to a specific pattern of symptoms that guides the practitioner in their therapy approach. In FDM, hands-on treatment techniques are employed to correct these identified distortions, with patient feedback playing an integral role in guiding the therapeutic process. This patient-centric approach sets FDM apart from other models of musculoskeletal care.

FDM has gained some recognition and use within physical therapy, osteopathy and sports medicine fields, particularly in Europe and Japan. While scientific research supporting its efficacy is somewhat limited at present time due to its recent conception compared to other models, anecdotal evidence suggests potential benefits warranting further study.
