Dural Tube

The Dural Tube is a membranous sheath enveloping the spinal cord and brain within the vertebral canal. Composed primarily of dura mater, the tube’s sturdy outermost layer, it serves as a protective barrier against external harm and houses cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which cushions the nervous system.

Structurally, this tough fibrous casing forms an integral part of the central nervous system’s architecture, extending from the foramen magnum at the base of the skull to the sacral hiatus at the tailbone. Its resilience contributes to maintaining structural integrity under physical stress.

Functionally, beyond its protective role, it facilitates the effective transmission of neural signals by insulating nerves and minimizing mechanical interference. Uniquely, its subdural space allows for smooth movement between neural structures and their casing while its epidural space provides a conduit for blood vessels supplying oxygen and nutrients.
